Prop 64: Understanding the Basics!
California voted yes on Prop 64 in November. So, what does this mean? Well, Prop 64 legalized marijuana and hemp for recreational use, though it has been legal for medicinal use for several years. Some citizens who were against the passage of Prop 64 were vocal about their concerns regarding who could purchase it and how it is used in the public sphere. Prop 64 took this into consideration, making it illegal for those under 21 (similar to tabacco sales). Moreover, it can’t be smoked in public and users cannot drive while high or give it to minors. Commercial pot growers will be licensed and there will be regulations on labeling, packaging, and marketing the substance.
Californians who do not possess a medical marijuana card may not be abe to legally purchase pot from dispensaries until the second part of Prop 64 goes into effect on January 1st 2018.
Some things to look out for in the coming years. What will be Prop 64’s influence on the drug cartels — will it strengthen or weaken them? Will this Prop allow prime-time television ads for marijuana? If you object to this; consider what makes it different than beer advertisements? Just some things to keep in mind.

Tech Neck
The basic definition is the name given to neck soreness from endlessly sitting in front of a computer, typing on a laptop or using any handheld technology. The pain is typically in the the cervical spine, which is why it’s called “tech neck,” but it is not limited to the neck. Overuse or improper use of technology can cause pain in the upper or mid-thoracic and lumbar spine as well.
Sitting with our shoulders hunched forward, neck straining at an uncomfortable angle and eyes squinting to read the screen in our hand is, unfortunately, becoming a common position at work or in social situations for people of all ages from 2 to 72, even older. It’s posture that is most often associated with smart phones, and since 92% of all adults own one, it’s safe to say that this habit isn’t going away anytime soon. Our heads are best carried in a neutral position (the center of our ears over our shoulders), and every inch we move our heads forward puts added strain on our neck. Too much time spent with our heads bent forward over some kind of technological device, beings to create Tech Necks.
There is not going to be a one-size fits all cure for Tech Neck. Gwanseob Shin of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology Ergonomics lab in South Korea says, “It is difficult to recommend a proper posture for smartphone users. If we raise the phone at eye level to avoid the look-down posture, it will add new concerns for the shoulder due to the elevated arm posture.” He claims that more frequent rest breaks from technology and some physical exercise to strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles is probably more practical. While being more practical, is it really reasonable?
Here are a few tips for avoiding Tech Neck:
– Be aware – consciously consider the position of your arms, shoulders and especially your neck when using technology
– Set Time Limits – take a 3 minute break for every 15-20 minutes you use your device
– Set automatic reminders – most smart devices have timers, take a time-out regularly
– Take Action – pain is our body’s warning system that something isn’t right; don’t ignore it.

Purify Your Home with Houseplants
From vehicle fumes to industrial pollutants, it’s clear that there are plenty of toxins outside of our homes. But that doesn’t mean toxins are absent from the house. Some toxins that contribute to the need for purification in your home include: cleaning products, chemical flame retardants, fragrances, formaldehyde, and toxins carried in your shoes or clothes. Here are a few plants that can help alleviate toxins in the air of your home.
Rubber Plant: The Rubber Plant is effective in removing formaldehyde from indoor air. It’s easy to grow or maintain, so if you don’t have a green thumb – this is a great solution for you! It can grow up to 8 feet tall in the correct environment.
Ferns: Ferns are a popular houseplant that is known for removing indoor air pollutants and adding humidity to indoor air.
Bamboo: Bamboo palms are effective at removing chemical contaminants from the air like formaldehyde and benzene. They also help to keep the air moist, which is especially helpful during winter months when heaters can produce overly dry indoor air.

Navigating New Years Resolutions
It’s never too early to plan for success, especially when it comes to planning for New Years Resolutions.
Resolutions are oftentimes goals that we should be working toward year-round; whether it be a better diet, more exercise, or less sugar intake. So how can we successfully make positive resolutions a part of our daily lives? Here are three suggestions.
Make a dedicated resolution calendar
A good way to implement and track your New Years resolutions is by dedicating a calendar or planner to your goals. You can find affordable calendars at your local dollar store or Target. If you opt for a calendar, hang it in a high traffic area of your house and keep track of your daily progress.
Break it down
Be sure to break down your goals into achievable segments. It’s safe to say that the more vague a goal is, the less likely it’ll be reached. Rather than proclaiming that you will read more in the year 2016, read one book every two weeks. Instead of saying you want to exercise more, make Tuesday and Thursday your jogging days. If you want to pay off more debt, set aside a specified amount every month that will allow you to reach your goal by the end of the year. Remember, success takes planning.
Find an accountability partner
It’s always easier to tackle a challenge with someone by your side. Get a friend or family member involved in your resolution and celebrate successful implementation with them as the months pass. For example, you could read a book every month with a partner, then treat yourselves to a literary conversation over scones and coffee. Sign up for a half marathon with a co-worker and hold each other accountable until the day of the race.
It’s never too late to implement goals and make yourself the best you can be. Be sure attend some of our monthly workshops at DeMoss Chiropractic, your ally in healthful and happy living.
